PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Alabama men's basketball shot 58 percent (34-of-58) from the field and limited West Florida to 36 percent (20-of-55) to claim 96-58 victory in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action on Saturday.
West Alabama (20-9; 15-6 in the GSC) marks its most regular season wins since the 1981-82 season. The win is the Tigers six straight in GSC action as they are only one game away from matching the program record. West Florida (7-20; 3-18) falls in its fifth straight game.
"We had good enthusiasm, intensity and energy coming into this game and we stayed with it," said UWA head coach
Allen Sharpe. "We had a good lead at the half and it is easy to get complacent, but we made sure we stayed with it and won every possession. We got better tonight."
Nine of the 10 Tigers that saw action posted multiple points.
Charles Eaton led the hot Tiger shooting with 22 points hitting seven of his 11 attempts from the field.
Justin Wright closely followed with 20 points, shooting 7-of-12. Wright's first 10 points came before the first media timeout.
Deontaye Ewing and Jarrell Byrd each added double-digit scoring marks; Ewing with 19 and Byrd with 11.
West Alabama led 42-18 point in the paint, 38-16 bench points and 15-6 second chance points. The Tiger defense also dominated with eight steals and six blocks. UWF finished with 14 turnovers, while UWA had 10.
West Alabama led 47-26 at the half shooting 17-of-30 (56 percent) from the field and 6-of-9 from the 3-point line. The Tigers improved to 17-of-28 (60 percent) in the second half.
Deangelo Legrier led West Florida with 11 points. He finished 4-of-8 from the field.
West Alabama will close its regular season on the road at West Georgia on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (C.S.T.) in Carrollton, Ga.
