VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State defeated West Alabama 3-1 in Gulf South Conference volleyball action Saturday. UWA snapped an eight set losing streak by taking set one 25-22, while the Blazers bounced back to take the final three sets 25-19, 25-15 and 25-20.
Valdosta State stretches its win streak to seven and improves to 7-0 overall; 3-0 in the GSC. West Alabama dips to 2-8 and 0-3.
VSU edged out the Tigers in hitting percentage with .194, while UWA hit .126. Lea Jaklen led the Blazers with 14 kills, followed by Susanna Peonia with 13. Â
Peonia along with Natalia Campos slowed West Alabama's attack with Compos' 28 digs and Peonia's six total blocks at the net.
Yanesha Johnson led the Tigers with 12 kills. She was supported by
Callie Murphy with 29 assists. On defense, UWA was led by
Abby Ames with 14 digs and
Kimberly Hernandez with 11.
Briana Sandifer posted three block assists.
"The girls really got after it this weekend," said UWA head coach
Jordan Lay. "We are very proud of the way they played. This was the toughest start to conference for anyone's schedule. Now that we've battled, we've set ourselves up to make a good run here on the back half. We are excited to be back home and want our fans to be proud to pack out Pruitt."
West Alabama volleyball returns home for just the second time this season on Tuesday when they will play host to GSC opponent Mississippi College. The match is set for 6 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
