Tiger Women 26th, Mukhametshina and Morral Ranked Nationally

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama women's tennis team is ranked No. 26 in the new Oracle/ITA Division II Women's National Poll. The pre-spring season ranking is up one spot from where the Tigers finished the 2016 season.

UWA's Amina Mukhametshina is ranked No. 31 in the nation in singles, while she and Georgina Morral are ranked No. 14 in doubles. Neither Mukhametshina, nor she and Morral, were ranked nationally when the 2016 season ended.

"It's great to see where Amina and Georgina are ranked going into the spring as a doubles pairing and where Amina is for singles," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "We will keep working hard as individuals and as a group, looking to get more players in the rankings as the ones already ranked keep moving up."

UWA is one of three Gulf South Conference women's tennis teams ranked in the national top 26. West Florida No. 7 and Valdosta State is 14th.

"The big picture now switches towards the spring team competition and accomplishing the goals we have for the team," Beaman said. "For our women to have a shot to make nationals in a region that has six of the current top 15 teams in the country is an accomplishment.

"I believe we have the schedule this spring to do what we need to earn a spot," Beaman said. "We are going to work hard to go out and earn it."

The Tigers open the spring season with a pair of exhibition matches, Jan. 28 at Jacksonville State and Feb. 4 against Meridian Community College and Marion Military Institute at the Vaughan Tennis Complex on the UWA campus. The regular season spring opener is Feb. 11 at Georgia Gwinnett.
