Box Score ROME, Ga. – Shorter Women's Basketball defeated West Alabama 75-61 in Gulf South Conference action on at the Winthrop-King Centre on Saturday.
It was the fifth straight win for Shorter, who improves to 17-6 overall and 14-5 in the GSC. West Alabama falls to 8-15 and 5-14.
"From the get-go we didn't have a good feel for this game," said UWA head coach
Rusty Cram. "We made too many mental mistakes which led to turnovers. We were just playing Shorter's game today, and by the time we had something going it was too late. We were obviously still gassed from Thursday night, and it's disappointing to go from a high of Thursday night to a low like today."
Shorter went on a 17 point run in the first half, holding the Tigers scoreless for six minutes to take a 38-29 lead at the half. The Hawks turned 10 UWA turnovers into 16 points.
Shorter's Shakierya McClendon owned 13 points in the first half, hitting 5-of-7 from the field. The Hawks led at the free-throw line in the first half, shooting 11-of-13 while UWA was 4-of-10. Taylor Adams had 10 first half points, sinking 6-of-8 at the charity stripe.
The Hawks continued to control the game outscoring West Alabama 16-8 in the third quarter. A late rally in the fourth quarter gave the Tigers 24 fourth quarter points with the help of five 3-point field goals from
Sydney King,
Peyton Parker,
McKenzie Parker and
Ariel Wilson. Shorter added 21 in the final quarter.
Wilson led UWA with 14 points, followed by King with 13 and Taylor with 12. McClendon finished with 15 points, while Adams totaled 20.
"We did all we could, it's just hard right now," Cram said. "I don't want to say we are still inexperienced since we are winding down the year, but we were just no there mentally today. No matter where we are at as a team, we have to learn from each game. Hopefully they will learn from this and we will see how they bounce back."
West Alabama women's hoops will return home to face Valdosta State on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
