AUGUSTA, Ga. – After winning two of three doubles matches, West Alabama got stellar play from
Andrea Tomassone at No. 4 singles and
Sandra Florez at No. 6 to defeat 49
th-ranked Augusta University Thursday at the Newman Tennis Center.
West Alabama's women are 12-3 overall, 12-1 this season against NCAA Division II competition. Augusta University dropped to 12-6.
"Today was a very long battle," UWA head coach
Jeff Beaman said. "
Sandra Florez played some of the best singles I have ever seen from her.
"Andrea (Tomassone) clinched the match after losing her first set and being tied 4-4 in the second set," Beaman said. "She battled back to win her second set and force a deciding third set, which she won."
Florez defeated Amelia Pinoargote 6-2, 7-6, while Tomassone defeated Gisela Font 1-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Amina Mukhametshina claimed UWA's other singles win, beating Brooke Durden 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1.
Mukhametshina and
Georgina Morral defeated Durden and Monica Gonzalez 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Tomassone and
Liliana Araucz defeated Amelia Pinoargote and Maria C. Pimentel 9-7 at No. 2 doubles to round out UWA wins.
The Tigers remain on the road for a Saturday match at Georgia College. Match time is 10 a.m. EDT.
