UWA Men Defeat Alabama State, Women Lose in Saturday Tennis

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The West Alabama men's tennis team notched a win over NCAA Division I opponent Alabama State on Saturday, but the Tiger women fell to the Hornets. The Tiger men won 4-3 and the women lost 5-2 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.

The win snapped a two-match losing skid for UWA's men. The Tiger women had their winning streak stopped at three matches.

"This is a good win for the men, last year ASU won their conference and went to the tournament," West Alabama coach Jeff Beaman said. "We competed better across the board today than we have for several matches."

The Tiger men won two of three doubles matches with Christopher Wood and Julius Kaverinen winning at #1 and Andrii Stratiienko and Nicolai Jochamowitz taking doubles #2. Kaverinen was a 6-4, 7-5 winner at #2 singles, while Wood won at #3 6-4, 6-3 and Stratiienko won at #5 by a 6-3, 6-2 score.

"The women had chances in this match, but Alabama State came out playing really tough after losing the doubles point," Beaman said. "We will refocus and be ready to show up tougher tomorrow."

West Alabama took the doubles point with Amina Mukhametshina and Georgina Morrall winning at #1, along with Evelyn Moreno and Sandra Florez winning at #3. Mukhametshina was the Tigers lone singles winner, taking a 6-1, 6-0 win over Arantxia Wijngaarde at #1.

Both the Tiger men and women travel to Birmingham Southern for a noon match on Sunday.
