Katia de la Garza Signs with West Alabama Tennis

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Katia de la Garza has signed a scholarship to play her intercollegiate tennis at the University of West Alabama.

Garza has won state, region and section tournaments over the last three years. In 2016, she won four national titles.

From Mexico, she has twice played in pre-World Cup matches against American, Canadian and Puerto Rican opponents. In 2014, Garza took first place in National Olympics and second place in doubles, while owning a No. 1 national ranking from 2013-2016. Last season, she grabbed second place in singles and first in doubles in Queretaro, while winning singles in Leon.

"Katia is a great addition to our program, we look for her to make an immediate impact in both singles and doubles," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "She is a strong student that graduated high school a year early, but has significant high level tennis experience and great maturity both on and off court."

Garza has been ranked as high as 912 in the women's professional tour doubles while competing as an amateur, making the quarterfinals of the 50K Tampico in October of 2016.

She is scheduled to see her first action as a Tiger Oct. 13-14 at the University of West Florida Fall Tournament.
