Former Major Leaguer Matt Miller to Speak at Grand Slam Dinner

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Former Major League Baseball pitcher Matt Miller will be the keynote speaker at the 2018 University of West Alabama Grand Slam Dinner. The annual dinner signals the beginning of a new Tiger baseball season.

The annual event is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Bell Conference Center on the UWA campus. Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for children 12-and-under, and can be purchased by contacting Penny Dew at 205 652-3784 or by emailing your ticket request to rrundles@uwa.edu. Reservations are required.
 
UWA baseball souvenirs will be available, as well as opportunities to meet and interact with Tiger baseball players and coaches.

Miller played 13 years of professional baseball, including five seasons in the Big Leagues with the Colorado Rockies and the Cleveland Indians. He posted a 6-1 record with a 2.72 earned run average over 100 MLB appearances as a relief pitcher. In 106 innings pitched, he struck out 95 and walked 44 with a 1.189 WHIP.
 
A product of Leland (Miss.) High School, Miller played collegiately at Delta State and Mississippi Delta Community College. He is one of 10 former Delta State players to play Major League Baseball and one of six from MDCC.
 
Miller led the nation in saves in 1991 at MDCC with 15. In 1995 at Delta State he set a school record with a 0.36 ERA in 28 appearances and was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-America team. 
 
Miller now runs 59 Baseball in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. 59 Baseball offers both individual and group instruction for the development of baseball skills. It also offers camps and clinics throughout the year designed for all ages and skill sets.
 
With a consistent approach to teaching fundamentals, along with controlled mechanics and repeatable movements, 59 Baseball believes that if the work ethic is there, success will eventually follow.
