Golden Eagles Snap UWA Win Streak at Five

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Amina Mukhametshina managed the only West Alabama singles win as NCAA Division I Southern Miss defeated the Tigers, 6-1, in women's tennis Thursday at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility.

The loss snapped a five-match winning streak for West Alabama, now 5-2. Southern Miss remained undefeated at home and improved to 5-3.

Southern Miss won the doubles point, even though Mukhametshina and Georgina Morral won the No. 1 court, 6-4.

"Today was a tough match against a good Division I team," UWA coach Jeff Beaman said. "The doubles point was critical, and when we did not win that point, we had a few slow starts in singles and that cannot happen against high-level opponents.

"The good thing to take from this is we fought until the end and were competitive on the last three courts on, so the comeback win was a possibility," Beaman said. "We need to take some things from this loss and use it to keep getting stronger as a team."

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play Saturday when Shorter visits the Vaughan Tennis Complex. Admission is free for Tiger tennis.
