West Florida Hands Tiger Women First GSC Loss

PENSACOLA, Fla. – In a battle between two top five NCAA South Region teams, West Florida handed West Alabama its first loss in Gulf South Conference play by defeating the Tigers, 7-2, Saturday at The Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.

The No. 7 Lady Argonauts improved to 11-5 overall, 5-0 in GSC play. No. 26 West Alabama had a five-match winning streak snapped, dropping to 10-3 and 5-1. UWF is ranked third in the region and West Alabama fifth.

"We ran into a tough West Florida team that competed great," UWA coach Jeff Beaman said. "After our start in doubles, going down 0-3, they were fired up going into singles and came out firing to finish us.

"We battled at spots, but our women definitely want another shot at them at the conference tournament," Beaman said.

West Alabama's victories came at No. 1 singles where Amina Mukhametshina defeated Paula Lopez 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 and at No. 3 singles where Georgina Morral beat Jordan Lajan 6-3, 2-2, retired.
