THE SERIES
This is the 44th meeting between the Tigers and the Choctaws. UWA leads the series 22-19-2.
 
WEST ALABAMA
West Alabama is 1-1 after a late rally came up short at FCS member Samford, with the Tigers losing, 49-41.
 
MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE
Mississippi College is 0-2 after losing, 32-9, last Saturday at Southwest Baptist.
 
THE COACHES
Brett Gilliland is 20-15 in his fourth season at UWA, his fourth as a head coach. John Bland is 6-26 in his fourth year at MC, 81-52 in his 13th year as a head coach.

SIX STRAIGHT
West Alabama has won six straight games in the series, dating back to the 1996 season, including the last three under Coach Brett Gilliland. Under Coach G, the Tigers won 38-18 in 2014, 14-13 in 2015 and 38-13 in 2016.
 
TOOK A BREAK
Both charter members of the GSC, the Tigers and the Choctaws did not play from 1999 to 2012 due to MC competing at the NCAA Division III level.
 
LAST MEETING
Lakendric Thomas ran for 145 yards and Harry Satterwhite threw three touchdown passes to lead UWA to a 38-13 victory over MC in week three of the 2016 season in Clinton, Mississippi. Jordan Jones led UWA with seven tackles and Felix Woods had six. The Tigers finished the game with 13 tackles behind the MC line of scrimmage.
 
TIGERS AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS
West Alabama is eighth nationally in passing offense at 355 yards per game, 11th in first own offense with 50 total and 13th in scoring offense at 43.5 points per game.
 
TIGERS LEAD GSC IN FOUR TEAM CATEGORIES
West Alabama leads the Gulf South Conference in scoring (43.5 pg), passing offense (355.0 pg), first downs (25 pg) and field goals made (4). The Tigers are second in total offense (501.5 pg) and third in first downs allowed (15.5 pg).
 
ARMSTRONG OVER 100 IN JUST 13
Donta Armstrong's nine receptions at Samford last week gives him 103 catches in his 13-game UWA career, an average of 7.9 receptions per game.
 
THERE'S MORE FOR ARMSTRONG
Donta Armstrong leads the GSC in receiving yards per game at 117 and all-purpose yards per game at 160.5
 
HOORAY FOR HARRY
UWA quarterback Harry Satterwhite leads the GSC in passing with 323.5 yards per game and total offense with 328.5 per game. He is second in the league in completion percentage at 67.4%.
 
DONTA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tiger receiver Donta Armstrong was named GSC offensive player of the week for his performance against Samford. Armstrong had touchdown receptions of 62 and 54 yards from Harry Satterwhite, returned a punt for 57 yards for a score and connected with Barnard McGhee to throw a 63-yard TD pass. He had nine receptions for 176 yards and the two scores, giving him 103 catches in his last 13 games.
 
AND A TIGHT END SHALL LEAD THEM
The leading receiver in the Gulf South Conference is UWA tight end Qua Boyd with 14 receptions. The Jones County (Miss.) JC product hauled in 10 at Samford last week.
 
DON'T FORGET THE DUDE
Tiger receiver Barnard "Dude" McGhee is second in the league behind his teammate Donta Armstrong in all-purpose yards with 119 per game.
 
KICK SCORING COLIN
UWA place kicker Colin Douglas leads the GSC in kick scoring at 10.5 per game, 21 total points. His four field goals also lead the league.
 
NEXT WEEK
West Alabama plays at home for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 16, opening Gulf South Conference play against Mississippi College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Samford travels between the hedges in Athens to take on Georgia.
 
11 MORE FOR COACH G
Coach Brett Gilliland is 20-15 since taking over the Tiger program in 2014. Gilliland needs just 12 wins to become the all-time winningest coach in UWA football history. Frank North won 31 games from 1979-84 to hold that record. Micky Andrews, who won the school's only national title in 1971, won 75 percent of his games (23-7-2) from 1970-72.
 
TOUGH ON 4TH DOWN
The Tiger defense has been tough on fourth downs this season allowing just one conversion in five attempts through the first two games (20%).
 
BIG NIGHT FOR KEJUAN
Tiger sophomore safety Kejuan Feagan made the most of his first start at UWA by recording 10 tackles at Samford last week. He made 8.5 tackles through the entire 2016 season.
