Football Sweeps GSC Weekly Awards After Road Win over No. 21 Bears

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Football program swept the GSC Weekly awards on Monday.

After taking home three of the four honors last week, West Alabama completed the GSC Weekly Award sweep this week after upsetting No. 21 Lenoir-Rhyne on the road. UWA's Luther Richesson repeated as the Offensive Player of the Week, Legend Doggett was named the Defensive Player of the Week, Dakarai Shanks earned the Freshman of the Week award for the second consecutive week, and Eion Walsh was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Richesson was methodical through the air against the Bears on Saturday. The Graduate Quarterback went 22-31 along with 201 passing yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Richesson led the team with 44 rushing yards on 10 carries. Through two games, the Quarterback has recorded 416 passing yards, 137 rushing yards, and five passing touchdowns on a 67.9 percent completion percentage.

Doggett stole the show on Saturday as he led the Tigers to their 34-23 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne. The Cornerback recorded two defensive touchdowns, with both coming in the fourth quarter. The first defensive score came with 8:16 left in the game with UWA trailing, 23-17. Doggett scooped up and a returned a fumble for a touchdown that was punched out by Joseph Harper. A possession later, the Graduate deflected a pass that ended up in the hands of Issaiah Parrish for an interception, before ending the game with an 80-yard pick-six on the following drive to virtually end the game. On the day, Doggett recorded two defensive touchdowns, two fumble recoveries, one interception, and 3.0 tackles, putting himself in the National Defensive Player of the Week conversation.

Shanks repeated as the conference's Freshman of the Week after another solid performance to begin the season. Shanks led all UWA Running Backs with 34 rushing yards on eight attempts, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. The redshirt freshman also added 18 receiving yards on two catches to his ledger.

In his second career collegiate game, Walsh is named the GSC Special Teams Player of the Week. The freshman went 1-2 on field goals, knocking through a 41-yarder while missing a 51-yarder. Walsh went 2-2 on PATs to record five points while punting the ball three times for 128 yards. Walsh pinned Lenoir-Rhyne inside their own 20 on one of his three points to cap off a solid day.

West Alabama will open up their home schedule on Saturday as they welcome Pittsburg State for a 12:00 p.m. matchup.
