UWA Softball Fighting Cystic Fibrosis During Weekend Series Against Valdosta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Softball team is set to host the "Fighting to Find A Cure for Cystic Fibrosis" event during the Gulf South Conference Weekend Series against the Valdosta State Blazers March 3-4 at the UWA Softball Complex.

"It is an honor to be able to help fight this disease as it hits so close to home for us here at UWA," said Head coach Carie Dever-Boaz. "It is our goal to raise $1000 every year in honor of these three special Tigers.  Athletics is important on many levels, but mostly by being a platform to help those who need fighters in their corner."

This weekend the team will wear purple ribbons to help with awareness of Cystic Fibrosis. CF is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time and has hit UWA on many levels for such a small community.

Libby Hankins, a former UWA cheerleader, lost her battle last year and we will be releasing a purple balloon in her honor.  Ethan Sakon the son of former UWA Professor-and head men's tennis coach Fred Sakon, is also fighting CF, and UWA Softball special guest Emmalynn Louise Dew, the daughter of Thomas and Emily Dew and granddaughter of UWA Provost Tim Edwards, wife Kathy Edwards and UWA Athletic Special Assistant Penny Dew and husband Ernest Dew.

Emmalynn will be throwing out the first pitch on Saturday with the support of her family.

During the week, the softball team has been collecting money all over campus this week and will continue to do so next week at the cafeteria to help raise funds for Children's Hospital in Birmingham to help find a cure.  All gate proceeds will go towards this as well.

VSU (14-4, 4-2) comes in after claiming a conference series win over Delta State at home. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
