Tiger Women Cruise to 8-1 Win Over Valdosta State

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Ranked 34^th in the nation, the University of West Alabama women's tennis team had little trouble with Valdosta State on Saturday, cruising by the Lady Blazers by an 8-1 score in a Gulf South Conference match.

West Alabama is 9-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play, leaving the Tigers in fifth place in the GSC standings. Valdosta State is 2-11 and 2-6 and in eighth place.

West Alabama's only loss in the match came at No. 1 doubles, where Katia De La Garza dropped a 10-8 tie-break to Sabrina Schmidt.

De La Garza and Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez, ranked 39^th nationally in doubles, notched an 8-3 victory over Schmidt and Estee Widdershoven at No. 1 doubles to get the match off on the right foot for UWA.

"This was a good win for the women," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "We came out and did what we needed to do."

Georgia Salom, Evelyn Moreno, Andrea Tomassone, Gonzalez-Rodriguez and Liliana Araucz were straight-set winners for West Alabama at singles 2 through 6, respectively.

Araucz and Tomassone won at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, while Salom and Moreno were 8-5 winners at No. 3 doubles.

West Alabama remains in GSC play by hosting Christian Brothers Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Vaughan Tennis Complex. Admission to the match is free. Valdosta State meets Delta State in GSC play Saturday in Pensacola.
