UWA Women’s Tennis Stretches Win Streak to Seven Matches

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The West Alabama women's tennis team extended its win streak to seven matches by cruising past Delta State, 9-0, in a Gulf South Conference match Thursday at the Cleveland Country Club.

The Tigers improved to 14-4 overall and 8-3 in GSC play with one regular season match to play Saturday at Alabama Huntsville. Delta State is 3-12 and 2-9.

Ranked ninth in the NCAA South Region standings, West Alabama is currently fourth in the GSC standings, a match-and-a-half behind Mississippi College in third. If UWA wins on Saturday and MC loses out, both teams would be 9-3 in the league. The Lady Choctaws hold the tiebreaker by virtue of a regular season win over the Tigers.

North Alabama is one match behind UWA at 7-4 with one league match to play at Shorter. A UNA win and a UWA loss would give the No. 4 seed to West Alabama due to a 5-4 win over the Lions last week.

The field of eight for the tournament, scheduled to begin April 19 in Montgomery, Alabama is set, but only West Florida has secured a seed at No. 1.

West Alabama, who climbed five spots in the national poll this week to No. 35, started with a doubles win at No. 1 with Katia De La Garza and Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez skunking Jemina Linn Sorman and Ione' Deroode, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles. De La Garza and Gonzalez-Rodriguez are ranked 19th nationally in doubles.

Andrea Tomassone and Liliana Araucz defeated Charlotte Le Flohic and Nathalia Sato at No. 2 doubles, while Georgina Salom and Imperia Martinez Mora beat Nathalia Stelzer and Sarah Nash at No. 3, both by 8-2 scores.

De La Garza, Salom, Evelyn Moreno, Gonzalez-Rodriguez, Araucz and Martinez Mora won singles 1 through 6, respectively. Only one singles match went past straight sets.
