HUNTSVILLE - The West Alabama women's tennis team ended its regular season on an eight-match winning streak by defeating Alabama Huntsville, 6-3, in a Gulf South Conference contest Saturday at Athletic Club Alabama.
The 35th-ranked Tigers head into the 2018 GSC Championships at the No. 4 seed with a 15-4 overall record, 9-3 in league play. UAH, the No. 8 seed in the tourney, is 6-13 and 4-8.
No. 19 Katia De La Garza and Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez, along with Liliana Araucz and Evelyn Moreno, won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles by 8-2 and 8-0 scores, respectively.
De La Garza defeated Stefanie Mehlich 6-2, 2-6, 10-4 at No. 1 singles. Evelyn Moreno beat Christina Cabanas 6-1 in the first set, only to see Cabanas retire for a win at No. 2. Andrea Tomassone was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 4 over Hailey Simon and Gonzalez-Rodriguez defeated Monika Polakovic 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5.
West Alabama will open play in the conference tournament on Thursday at 1:30 at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Alabama against North Alabama.
