Lions Eliminate Tigers From GSC Tennis Tourney

MONTGOMERY – North Alabama snapped an eight-match West Alabama winning streak and eliminated the Tigers from the women's 2018 Gulf South Conference Tennis Championships with a 5-4 victory Thursday at Lagoon Park.

The victory improved North Alabama's record to 12-6 and extended the Lions winning streak to five matches. Ranked 37^th nationally, West Alabama falls to 15-5 and awaits the decision of the NCAA regional committee to see if the Tigers continue playing this season.

West Alabama won two of three doubles points, but the Lions roared back to win four of six in singles to claim the victory. North Alabama will play third-ranked West Florida on Friday.

"This was an over four-and-a-half hour battle that was as close as matches get," UWA head coach Jeff Beaman said. "It is not the result we wanted, but the women can be proud of the fight they put in."

Katia De La Garza and Georgina Salom defeated Claudia Arroyo and Donna Haycock, 8-2, in No. 1 doubles. Andrea Tomassone and Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez beat Claire DeGeorge and Alisa Savina at No. 3 doubles.

De La Garza defeated Arroyo 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Gonzalez-Rodriguez beat Elise Sickle 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles for West Alabama's only singles courts victories.
