Waites Drafted By San Francisco Giants

University of West Alabama right-handed pitcher Cole Waites was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 2019 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on Wednesday. Waites was taken in the 18th round.

Waites selection in the 18th round marks the highest selection of a West Alabama player since current Washington Nationals reliever Tanner Rainey was taken by the Cincinnati Reds as a compensatory selection following the second round in 2015.

He is the seventh consecutive pitcher to be drafted out of UWA since Jason Herman was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005, followed by Ryne Lawson by the Boston Red Sox in 2006, Gandy Stubblefield by the Philadelphia Phillies and Rainey by the Reds in 2015. JT Salter and Steffon Moore were taken by the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays, respectively, in 2018.

Waites just finished his junior season at West Alabama as the all-time strikeout leader with 282 over the last three years. The Lawrenceville, Georgia product led the Gulf South Conference in strikeouts this season with 118.

He has pitched in 42 games for the Tigers, starting 36 over the past three seasons while posting a 12-10 record with a 3.93 earned run average. Opponents batted just .190 against Waites this this, .211 for his career.
