Furlong to Coach UWA Running Backs

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– Former Gulf South Conference standout Will Furlong has been named as running backs coach at the University of West Alabama, according to an announcement today by head coach Brett Gilliland

"We are excited to have Will join our staff. He brings great knowledge of our conference and offensive football," Gilliland said. "I believe he is an excellent addition to our staff, our football family and our university."

A former All-GSC player and a member of the University of North Alabama Team of the Decade as an offensive lineman (2010-19), Furlong comes to UWA from Athens (Ala.) High School, where he has been coaching the offensive line.

Previous coaching stops for Furlong include being the offensive coordinator for the Potsdam Royals in Germany, helping lead the team to the European League championship in 2018. Furlong's offense in Potsdam averaged 51.3 points per game and set the European League record for points in a season.

Furlong was also the offensive line coach for the North Coast Heat  in Australia, as well as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Point (Ga.) University. He helped lead Point to the 2015 Sun Conference championship.

He began his coaching career as an assistant offensive line coach at North Alabama, helping lead the Lions to GSC titles in 2013 and 2014.

After being a starter at right guard at Florida State, Furlong transferred to UNA, where he started 31 games at left tackle on the way to all-conference and all-region honors. He was voted by his Lion teammates as a captain and winner of the 2012 leadership award.
