Dates, Times For GSC Baseball Home Opener Changed

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Due to the inordinate amount of precipitation over the last few days in Sumter County, the baseball series between West Alabama and West Florida is pushing back the start of the series a day to allow for more optimal playing conditions at Tartt Field.

The Tigers and the Argonauts are now scheduled to begin the series Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.

Saturday's first game will be the 51st game in the series between the Tigers and Argonauts, with West Florida leading 29-21. This is the 29th meeting at Tartt Field, with each team winning 14 of the previous 28.

West Alabama comes into its GSC home opener with a 5-5 record, 0-3 in conference play after being swept at Mississippi College last weekend. West Florida is 4-5 and 2-1 after taking two of three games at Montevallo last weekend.

Two of the top five pitching staffs in the GSC will square off in this series. West Florida is fourth in the league with a 3.65 earned run average and UWA is fifth at 3.80. UWA is ninth in the league in hitting with a team batting average of .253 and UWF is 10th at .246.

West Alabama is led at the plate by second baseman Connor Christian, who is hitting . 323. He is followed by first baseman Taylor Clemmons at .306 and right fielder Brayden Lyman at .303. West Florida also has a trio of .300 hitters, led by freshman designated hitter Brooks Mitchell at .333. Cather Trevor Payne and left fielder Justin Dunham are both hitting .310.

Right-handed starters Peyton Warren and Mason Hollander led the West Alabama pitching staff. Warren is 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA and Hollander is 2-0 with a 2.16. All three probable starting pitchers for the Argos have ERAs under 3.00. Eric Keating is 2-1 with a 2.65, followed by Hunter Lucas at 1-1 with a 2.77 and Daniel Floyd at 1-0 and 2.84.

West Alabama head coach Gary Rundles comes into the series needing three wins to reach the 1,000 career victory mark as a collegiate baseball coach. Argos skipper Mike Jeffcoat needs seven wins to reach 500 in his 15th season at UWF.

The games will be carried live on ESPN 104.9, the Twin States Sports Authority. Links for listening to the broadcast in non ESPN 104.9 coverage areas, along with the video simulcast of the radio call and live stats can be found at uwaathletics.com in the Calendar section on bottom portion of the landing page or listed on the 2020 baseball schedule.
