Softball Headed to West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama's softball team travels to Pensacola to play in their first Gulf South Conference game of the 2021 spring season against West Florida.

The Tigers and Argonauts are scheduled to open the three-game series with a single game Friday at 5 p.m. at UWF Softball Complex, followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.

"We are excited to be going south to a little warmer weather," UWA head coach Carie Dever-Boaz said. "Every weekend we get to play is such a blessing. This team has worked super hard and faced a lot of adversity. They are passionate and enjoying every moment of this season together."

UWA comes into the series with a 4-2 record. UWF is 3-3 overall. This is the first GSC game for both teams.

Freshman Peyton Coots leads West Alabama hitters with a .571 batting average, followed by Morgan Windham and LP Trammell hitting .500.

UWF pitcher Kelsey Sweatt (2-1) is the current GSC Pitcher of the Week after pitching 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts while giving up no earned runs against Hillsdale in game two Feb. 13. First basemen Ally Merrill leads the Argonauts hitters with a .467 batting average.

"We are excited to test our skills against one fo the top teams in the GSC. We are ready," Dever-Boaz said.

According to goargos.com, in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, UWF will limit attendance for the 2021 home softball season to immediate family members of UWF student-athletes and coaches. Visiting teams are permitted a limited pre-approved guest pass list. Face coverings and at least six feet of social distancing will be required by spectators and staff.
