100 Wins for Orr as Women’s Soccer Defeats Spring Hill in GSC Season Opener

Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. - West Alabama women's soccer team handed head coach Graeme Orr his 100th win at UWA by scoring three goals in the first nine minutes of the match to take a 3-1 victory over Spring Hill in the Gulf South conference season opener Friday evening at Sage Park.

UWA improved its overall record to 3-0-1 and 1-0 in GSC play. SHC dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

"It's tremendous to get the 100th win for the program," Orr said. "It would not have been possible without all the great players that have put on a UWA jersey throughout the years. I am very grateful for all of them."

It was an exciting start to the night when Anele Komani found the back of the net off an assist from Dana Cruz and Megan Ongteco in the first 48 seconds of the match to give UWA a 1-0 lead over SHC.

The Tigers remained strong on offense and scored back-to-back goals with just six seconds in between the two.

Cruz scored the second goal for UWA at the 9:15 mark then four seconds later Komani scored her second goal of the night, third goal for the Tigers, giving West Alabama a 3-0 advantage in the first nine minutes of the game.

Spring Hill scored its only goal of the match in the first half in the 26th minute to cut UWA's lead 3-1.

After a combination of four goals from both teams in the first half, the second half became a scoreless match on both sides of the ball.

"I think we started the game off very well and played some decent soccer in poor conditions," Orr said. "We deserved the lead at the lighting delay. It is always difficult to get the same tempo after an hour and a half delay, but all the credit goes to the ladies getting three goals in tonight's matchup over Spring Hill."

UWA outshot SHC 10-4 and limited the Badgers to two shots on goal. Spring Hill got a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. The physical contest featured only eight fouls, four on both teams with one yellow card.

The Tigers' goalie Tabitha Weldon recorded one save as she faced four shots in the 90 minutes of action. The Badgers' keeper Anna Brunner had four saves as she faced 10 shots, including eight on frame.

UWA continues Gulf South Conference play Sunday against West Florida. The Tigers and the Argonauts are set to kickoff at 4:30 p.m. at the UWF Soccer Complex.
