Women’s Hoops at Ninth in D2SIDA South Region Poll

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama women's basketball sits at ninth in week eight of the Division II Sports Information Directors Association South Region Poll. This media poll is in its eighth year of existence.

The Tigers are 10-4 on the season and 4-2 in GSC play. UWA is 6-1 at home in Pruitt Hall Gymnasium. The Tigers took a 64-51 defeat from Valdosta State that ended their winning streak at home on January 2. 

The past two games on the UWA women's basketball schedule against Lee University and Auburn Montgomery have both been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The Tigers will now battle Lee University on February 21 at 5 p.m. in Cleveland, Tenn. The AUM makeup game will be announced at a later date. 

The Tigers offense is led by Tazsa Garrett-Hammett. The LaGrange, Ga. native is averaging 15.7 points per game, ranking her seventh in the GSC for scoring. The senior forward also averages 6.3 rebounds per game. 

Bria Dent leads the Tigers in rebounds, averaging 10.4 per game. The Birmingham, Ala. native is ranked second in the GSC for rebounds. The junior guard is averaging 14.2 points per game, ranking her eleventh in the conference in scoring. 

Jala Williams is averaging 4.8 assists per game and is currently ranked second in the conference with a total of 62 assists.

The Tigers average 68.6 points per game, while holding its opponent to 56.3 points per game. 

Four other GSC teams were also on the poll. Union (11-2) leads the South Region, Valdosta State (11-2) is ranked third, West Florida (11-2) sits at fifth, with Lee (11-3) is right behind UWF at sixth.

The Tigers are back at Pruitt Hall Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 15 to battle Christian Brothers in a GSC matchup. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
