Tiger ASR Rate Highest in 16 Years

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama Athletic Department has posted it highest Academic Success Rate in 16 years. Sponsoring 16 sports, UWA Athletics posted an ASR rate of 74 percent according to data released by the NCAA this week.

West Alabama's ASR is up 11 percent from a year ago and 20 percent from 2012. Data for this year is based on the student-athlete cohort that entered college from 2012-15.

This marks the first time since 1999 that the Tigers rate has topped 70 percent and is two percentage points higher than the overall Gulf South Conference, which at 72 percent marks the second consecutive year the league has topped 70.

The Academic Success Rate is the percentage of student-athletes who graduate within six years of initial college enrollment and includes virtually all Division II student-athletes, including transfers and those not receiving athletic scholarships.

Because of this, ASR captures about 40 percent more student-athletes than the federal rate, largely due to over 31,000 non-scholarship student-athletes being included in the NCAA ASR calculation.

Men's tennis, softball and volleyball lead the way for individual sports for this UWA cohort with an ASR of 100, followed by women's soccer at 96, women's basketball ad women's cross country/track at 90, women's tennis at 78 and men's soccer at 76.
