ROME, Ga. – West Alabama baseball hits the road this weekend for a three-game Gulf South Conference series against Shorter at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex. The Tigers and Hawks teams will play a double-header beginning Friday at 10 a.m. CST, with the series finale to follow Saturday at noon.
West Alabama is 4-12 overall, 2-1 in GSC play. Shorter is 10-6 and 4-2.
West Alabama is looking to rebound from losing two of three to Young Harris last weekend at home. Shorter lost to Georgia College, 13-9, this past Tuesday.
The Tigers will send Peyton Warren (1-3, 4.68) to the mound for game one of the series, followed by Thomas Boothe (0-2, .265) in the second game of the doubleheader. Brenton Thiels (1-1, 5.28) is set to throw game three on Saturday. Warren's 25 innings pitched is second in the GSC.
Left-handed hitter Josh Bower leads West Alabama hitters with a .385 batting average, followed by shortstop Brayden Lyman at .339 with a team-leading 14 runs batted in. Nemith and corner infielder Gavin Rogers share the UWA lead in home runs with two each. Bower leads the club with eight multiple hit games, while outfielder Kyle Vogler comes into the series with a seven-game hitting streak. Nemith has reached base in all 16 games this season.
Jonathan Pintaro (3-1, 3.22) and Tyler McWillie (1-0, 5.56) have both started four-games for Shorter. A game three starter could be any number of Hawks, with eight having started at least one game this season. Shorter is fourth in the league in pitching with a team earned run average of 4.67. Pintaro is second in the GSC with opponents batting just .145 against him and leads the league in strikeouts with 30.
The Shorter bats have gotten off to a hot start this season. The Hawks are hitting .290 as a team with 24 home-runs to lead the GSC. Lyndon Weaver leads SU with a .385 batting average and leads the conference with seven home runs. Weaver also leads the league with a .923 slugging percentage and a 1.466 OPS.
Shorter is sixth in the league in hitting at .290, while UWA is seventh at .281. Both the Tigers and the Hawks have struggled with the gloves, combining for 77 errors.
