Matlock Named D2CCA All-South Region

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Alabama softball outfielder Cassie Matlock has been named the 2022 Division II Conference Commissioner's Associations (D2CCA) First Team All-South Region. 

"Cassie worked hard all year and it paid off," UWA head coach Stephanie Defeo said. "She finished the season strong and was relentless at the plate. She was a hard out for anyone. We are so proud of her and this award. She earned it."

This is Matlock's third postseason honor as she was also named Most Outstanding Player at the Gulf South Conference Softball Championship Tournament and was named First Team All-GSC. 

"Cassie was incredible at the tournament," Defeo added. "Not only did she crush the ball, but she was also amazing in the outfield. I am so proud of how she played all year and her performance when our season was on the line. She is a true competitor."

The senior outfielder ended the season with a .432 batting average with 15 doubles, five triples, and three home runs. Matlock collected 37 RBIs and scored 48 runs. She stole 32 bases on her 37 attempts. She ranked third in batting average, fifth in doubles, and second in triples and stolen bases. The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada native ended the season with a fielding percentage of .972. 

West Florida third baseman Teala Howard was named D2CCA South Region Softball Player of the Year. Valdosta State pitcher Samantha Richards was named D2CCA South Region Pitcher of the Year.
