Matlock Named Most Outstanding Player, Mynard Named to GSC All-Tournament Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - West Alabama softball members Cassie Matlock and Hannah Mynard earned postseason awards at the 2022 Gulf South Conference Softball Championship Tournament, announced on Sunday after the championship game. 
 
Outfielder Cassie Matlock was named the GSC Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
 
"Cassie was incredible at the tournament," head coach Stephanie Defeo said. "Not only did she crush the ball, but she was also amazing in the outfield. I am so proud of how she played all year and her performance when our season was on the line. She is a true competitor."
 
Matlock had 10 hits with 14 at-bats for a batting average of .714 while recording four doubles and one home run over the four games in postseason play. She collected five RBIs, scored six runs, and stole three bases on her three attempts. Matlock ended postseason play with a fielding percentage of 1.000. After Matlock's big week, she is ranked third in the GSC with a .432 batting average. 
 
The senior outfielder ended the season with 73 hits on 169 at-bats with 15 doubles, five triples, and three home runs. Matlock collected 37 RBIs and scored 48 runs. She stole 32 bases on her 37 attempts. The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada native ended the season with a fielding percentage of .972. 
 
Matlock tallied 128 hits over three seasons at UWA, one being a shortened season due to COVID-19. The senior outfielder has a career fielding percentage of .967. Matlock was named to the 2022 First Team All-GSC, 2021 Second Team All-GSC, and the 2021 GSC Spring All-Academic Honor Roll. 
 
"Hannah stepped up this season on the mound, at the plate, and in the outfield," Defeo said. "She was locked in during the tournament."
 
Mynard was named to the GSC All-Tournament team. Mynard scattered 16 hits, gave up only eight earned runs, struck out 12, and walked eight over 16 innings in the circle at the GSC Championship Tournament. 
 
In the circle, Mynard pitched 137.1 innings this season and struck out 107 batters. The junior outfielder also tallied 40 hits with 14 doubles, one triple, and six home runs this season. Mynard collected 27 RBIs, scored 31 runs, and stole 10 bases. The Enterprise, Alabama native ended the season with a fielding percentage of .946.

Over her career at UWA, Mynard pitched 182.2 innings and struck out 132 batters. Mynard tallied 44 hits with 14 doubles, two triples, and eight home runs during her two seasons as a Tiger. She has collected 37 RBIs and scored 34 runs. She has a career fielding percentage of .938. Mynard was named to the 2021 GSC Spring All-Academic Honor Roll. 
 
"Both players earned the recognition, and we are so proud of them," Defeo added. 
 
Joining Matlock and Mynard on the All-Tournament team are Kiara Akles (Alabama Huntsville), Kaylee Vaught (Alabama Huntsville), Layton Murphy (Alabama Huntsville), Avery Dickerson (Auburn Montgomery), Alanna Goble (Auburn Montgomery), Chloe Derrick (Auburn Montgomery), Haley Ann Frank (Auburn Montgomery), Olivia Aycock (Auburn Montgomery), and Gia Martin (Auburn Montgomery). Grace White (Union) was named the GSC Champion Scholar-Athlete. Auburn Montgomery was the 2022 GSC Champions.
