BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Gulf South Conference (GSC) announced on Monday that senior defensive back
Artavious Washington was chosen as the league's Defensive Player of the Week after his performance against No. 5/6 Angelo State last Thursday night.
The Lexington, Miss. native had two interceptions against one of the best defenses in the country a year ago and added three tackles and a pass breakup.
His first career interception in a Tiger uniform was a big one for both ends of the ball. On a third down play in the first period, Washington picked off Gerald Gardner's pass and returned it 38 yards to the ASU 27-yard-line. On the next play from scrimmage,
Spencer Arceneaux scored on a 27-yard rush to even the game at seven.
Late in the first half, with the Rams driving inside the red zone, Gardner found Washington again in the end zone for his second INT of the game that ended a six-play, 49-yard drive.
Washington and the rest of the Tigers return to action on Saturday at Limestone (S.C.) for a 11 a.m. CT kickoff.
