Rivera, Mutilba Claim ITA Cup Doubles Championship

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The University of West Alabama Women's Tennis duo of Shaira Rivera and Valentina Mutilba added another championship to their resumes on Sunday, winning the ITA Cup Doubles Title.

The duo of Rivera and Mutilba defeated Angelo State's Avery Durham and Eva Schwartz in three sets, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 to claim their second title in as many weeks.

"The women had a great day today," said head coach Jeff Beaman. "They remained positive in a tough match and played aggressive in tight situations."

After winning the ITA Regional Championship last week, Rivera and Valentina kicked off the ITA Cup Tournament on Friday, by defeating Saint Mary's Karen Kondo and Selina Wu in straight sets.

The Tigers duo then faced off against Washburn's duo of Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro in the Quarterfinals. Rivera and Mutilba breezed through Washburn, winning in straight sets, 6-4,6-3 to advance to the Semifinals.

Cameron Universities' Anastasia Uspenskaia and Jenna Goessel awaited Rivera and Mutilba in the semis. Similar to their Quarterfinals' matchup, Rivera and Mutilba got through Cameron's duo with ease, defeating them 6-2, 6-3, setting up their Finals matchup where they handled Angelo State in three sets.

Rivera, Mutilba, and the Tigers will now gear up for the Fall GSC Championships which is set to take place next weekend in Tuscaloosa.
