Women’s Tennis Trounces Shorter In GSC Road Match

ROME, Ga. - The University of West Alabama women's tennis squad defeated Shorter University in a clean sweep, 7-0, from the Walt Attaway Complex Friday afternoon.

The Tigers took care of business in the doubles section, highlighted by a 6-0 win by Khim Iglupas and Heden Ly.

UWA didn't give up singles set throughout the day, including back-to-back 6-0 sets by Greta Zawels.

"It's always great to get a win in the conference to get things going early on," said head coach Jeff Beaman.

With the win, UWA moves to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play, while Shorter falls to 1-4 and 0-3.

The Tigers will now have a weeklong break ahead of them before taking part in the ITA Indoor National Championships.

"With Indoor Nationals coming up, we feel like it's go-time. We're excited about the opportunity to compete," said Beaman.  

West Alabama will take on No. 4 Flagler College in the quarterfinal round Friday, Feb. 23 in Kearney, Nebraska. The first serve is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
