BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Announced by the Gulf South Conference on Wednesday afternoon, the University of West Alabama softball team's Mary Grace Sheffield was named the Gulf South Conference Championship Scholar Athlete for softball.
Sheffield, a senior from Linden, Ala., won the award for the first time in her career. The Tiger centerfielder posted a 4.00 grade point average while majoring in chemistry and plans to attend Auburn University's Harrison College of Pharmacy this fall upon completion of her undergraduate degree at UWA.
The award is given out at the final site of each GSC Championship event and awarded to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA among teams participating.
Each student-athlete grade point average is based on the most recently completed term, and the individual must have at least 48 credit hours to be eligible for the award. Student-athletes are only eligible to win the award once per academic year.
