For the women, the high point has been graduate student
Yakubu Balikis. The sprinter currently holds the best time in the GSC in the 100 meters (11.35) and the 200 meters (23.53). Making NCAA provisional marks, the Lagos, Nigeria native holds the sixth-fastest time in Division II in the 100 and 11th in the 200. Both times are also UWA bests.Â
Two Tigers also have a shot for the podium in the 200,
Nesha Bourrage and
Gabriel Stephens. Bourrage is fifth in the league with a 24.81, while Stephens has a 24.92. Both of those PRs came last week at Mississippi College.
Along with her sprint in the 200, Bourrage also has the top GSC time in the 400 entering the championship this weekend. Running a 56.20 at Georgia Tech a couple of weeks ago, she became the fastest in program history in the event.Â
The goal now for Bourrage is achieving the NCAA provisional time of 55.93, and she's within striking distance.Â
In the long jump,
Callie Cowan soared into the top 10 last week with a 5.18-meter performance, good for ninth in the conference. After clearing over five meters earlier in the season at Berry College, she improved her PR by 0.14 meters at MC on April 26.Â
Cowan is also seventh in the GSC in the triple jump (10.28 meters).Â
On the men's side, three Tigers are looking to medal this weekend in the 100 meters.
Tyrie Payne Sherrod leads all sprinters at UWA with at 10.65 seconds, followed by
Antonio Young (10.68) and
Lawrence Walker Jr. (10.68).Â
In the 200, Walker Jr. sits in fifth in the 200 meters with a 21.51-second mark. He is 0.3 seconds out from provisional status.Â
The Tiger sprinters hold a top time of 41.04-second performance in the 4x100 relay.
In the hurdles,
Brayden Harris sits in fourth in the 110 (15.11) and fifth in 400 (56.40).
Caleb Vann looks to improve his PR of 13.45 meters in the triple jump. He sits in seventh in the league going into the championships.Â
