Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Women's Tennis began their weekend with a 7-0 sweep over No. 18 Cameron while the Men fell 5-2.
Shaira Rivera, Valentina Mutilba, Alexa Milliam, Emiri Takanishi, Greta Zawels, and Ximena Ku all contributed to West Alabama's (3-1, 1-0 GSC) over No. 18 Cameron (0-1). On the Men's side, Federico Iturbe and Afonso Portugal picked up the lone wins for UWA (2-4, 0-2 GSC) against Cameron's (1-1) Men's squad.
"It was a good win for the Women against the 18th ranked team in the country," said Head Coach Jeff Beaman. "As for the Men, we had a tough opponent in front is us today. We're getting better at certain things but we have to keep improving."
Women's Tennis: West Alabama 7, Cameron 0
Rivera and Mutilba continued their dominance in doubles' winning their matchup 6-4 while Milliam and Takanishi picked up a 6-1 win. To round out doubles, Ku and Zawels recorded a 6-4 win to complete the sweep of the doubles matches.
In singles play, Rivera battled with Anastasia Uspenskaia, outlasting Cameron's number one with a (6-4, 3-6, 10-6) win. In Line Two, Mutilba defeated Martyna Jankowska in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) while Milliam and Takanishi handled their business in Lines Three and Four.
In Line Five, Zawels fought back from dropping the first set to Alexsa Paucar. Zawels came back to win the match (3-6, 6-3, 10-3). In Line Six, Ku advanced with a win due to a Cameron forfeit.
MEN'S TENNIS: Cameron 5, West Alabama 2
The duo of Iturbe and Jacob Tapia picked up the lone win in doubles play for the tigers while Iturbe also picked up a win in singles play (6-4, 5-7, 10-6) over Lachlan Setina.
In Line Three, Portugal defeated Raphael Valente (6-3, 7-6) to secure the second and final point of the day for UWA.
West Alabama will begin Day Two of the GSC-Lonestar Crossover on Saturday with a matchup against UT Tyler that's set for 11:00 a.m.
