LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Track Program secured three GSC Weekly Awards this week with Yakubu Balikis and Lawrence Walker Jr. being named the Track Athlete of the Week and Mercy Lomuria being named the Freshman of the Week.
Balikis, Walker Jr., and Lomuria all put together standout performances at the inaugural UWA Invitational this past weekend with the trio combining for six first place finishes.Â
Like she's done throughout her career, Balikis shined in the Sprint events, registering first place finishes in the 100m and the 200m with times of 11.83 and 24.27, respectively. The graduate student is now a two-time winner of the GSC Track Athlete of the Week award this year as her encore season continues.
As for Walker Jr., he picks up his first GSC Weekly award of the year after being a vital piece to the Tigers' puzzle on Saturday. The Sprinter placed in the top-three in three different events this past weekend, finishing first in the 200m with a time of 21.73 while being the second athlete to cross the finish line in the 100m with a 10.76 time. Walker was also a part of UWA's 4x100m relay team, helping West Alabama win the event with a 41.51 time.
Lomuria continues to strengthen her case for a GSC Freshman of the Year selection after the Distance Runner picked up two more wins at the UWA Invitational. The freshman beat the former school record in the 3000m event by 30 seconds, crossing the line in a blazing 10:14.63. Lomuria wasn't done on the day as she won the 1500m event with a time of 4:43.73.
Balikis, Walker Jr., Lomuria, and the Tigers will be back in action this Saturday for Falcon Classic on the campus of Montevallo.
