Box Score 2 MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team fell in the first two games of their series against the Montevallo Falcons on Friday.
No. 24 West Alabama (14-11, 7-7 GSC) held late leads in both games on Friday but couldn't close out Montevallo (12-15, 6-8 GSC) as the Falcons picked up two walkoff wins.Â
GAME ONE: Falcons 4, Tigers 3
Madison Wright remained the Tigers' Game One starter as she got the ball to begin the day on Friday. Wright breezed through the first three innings, allowing just one hit, keeping the game scoreless, heading into the fourth.Â
In the top of the fourth, Taylor Clegg opened up the scoring as the senior belted a solo Home Run to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.Â
In the fifth, UWA added onto their lead with Ann Marie Stanbridge registering a sacrifice fly that scored Haley Shannon while the Falcons continued to struggle with Wright on the mound. The lefty put together another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth, turning things back over to her offense.
Jessica Cross added on to West Alabama's lead in the sixth as the catcher doubled, driving home Clegg to make it a 3-0 game.
The bottom of the sixth is where the game turned for the Tigers. Wright retired the first two batters in the inning and seemed to be on the way to another 1-2-3 inning until an error from UWA kept the inning alive for Montevallo. Next batter up for the Falcons was Ariana Pinder who hit a two-run homer before Molly Penske followed that up with a Home Run of her own, tying the game at three.Â
The Tigers threatened to respond in the top of the seventh but left the bases loaded. In the bottom half, Montevallo scored off a wild pitch to walk it off, defeating UWA, 4-3, in Game One.
GAME TWO: Falcons 6, Tigers 5
West Alabama stormed out to a 4-0 lead in Game Two after Mitchell, Clegg, Stanbridge, and Ella Watson all registered RBIs in the first inning, giving starter Eleanor De Block a nice cushion to begin.Â
Working with a four-run lead, De Block got through the first two innings unscathed before running into trouble in the third. A UWA error and a base hit from Bentlee Stiner put the Falcons in business in the inning with Becca Benton hitting a three-run home run to cut West Alabama's lead to one.Â
After a combined seven runs through the first three innings from the two teams, neither side could push a run across for innings as the Tigers took their 4-3 lead into the final frame. De Block remained in the game in the seventh and secured the first out before back-to-back doubles from Montevallo tied the game at four, sending the game into extra innings.Â
West Alabama scored first in extras as Clegg drove Mitchell home with a bunt in the ninth inning. Heading into the bottom half, UWA found themselves three outs away from the win again until RBI-doubles from Montevallo's Ellie Derrick and Skylar Johnson won the game for the Falcons, 6-5.
Due to weather, West Alabama and Montevallo will now play Game Three on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
