LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team dips out of conference play on Tuesday for a midweek double header against Columbus State which is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. EST.
West Alabama (14-12, 7-8 GSC) comes into Tuesday's double header after dropping their weekend series to Montevallo while Columbus State (22-8, 3-3 PBC) enters after winning their weekend series against Augusta.
The Tigers will use Tuesday's non-conference matchup against the Cougars as an opportunity to find their groove again. UWA's production at the plate and on the mound has dipped over the last two weeks, which isn't unusual in a 50 game season.Â
Through it all, West Alabama still has some of the best players in the league on their roster. Marissa Mitchell remains one of the greatest offensive talents in the country as the Second Baseman brings a .423 batting average along with seven Home Runs, and 21 RBIs into Tuesday's play. Taylor Clegg and Ann Marie Stanbridge also continue to thrive at the plate as Clegg ranks second on the team with a .338 average while Stanbridge holds a .321 average. In the middle of the order, the duo of Clegg and Stanbridge have combined to drive in 41 runs for West Alabama this season.
On the mound, Madison Wright and Eleanor De Block remain the workhorses. Wright holds a 7-6 record with a 3.31 ERA while De Block leads the team with a 2.53 ERA, winning seven of her nine decisions this year. This past weekend, freshman Alyssa Brown made her first career appearance on the mound, pitching 3.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits. Brown's emergence gives head coach Stephanie Defeo another solid arm out of the bullpen along with Megan Roe.
Columbus State possesses two of the best pitchers in the Peach Belt Conference on their roster in Lilly Miller and Julianna Franklin. Miller and Franklin rank first and second in the PBC in ERA, with Miller leading the way with a 1.52 mark while Franklin carries a 1.87 ERA into Tuesday's matchup. Franklin holds the number one spot in the Cougars rotation as the senior lefty has already racked up a conference-high 104.2 innings. Miller, on the other hand, is a freshman right hander who carries a 9-1 record along with her prestigious ERA.
Offensively, Columbus State is hitting .271 as a team with Holly Lynn leading the charge. Lynn, a junior Catcher, stands fifth in the country and first in the PBC with 10 Home Runs while registering 22 RBIs with a .299 average. Lynn comes into the matchup against the Tigers after hitting Home Runs in her previous two games. While Lynn brings the pop to the Cougars lineup, Madison McDonald and Izzy Ripatti are on-base machines. McDonald is batting .317 while Ripatti leads the team in batting average and on-base percentage with a .380 average and a .456 OBP.
First pitch on Tuesday is set for 2:00 p.m. EST at Cougar Field.
