Softball Returns Home for GSC Matchup Against Statesmen

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team is set to resume conference play this weekend as the Tigers welcome the Delta State Statesmen for a three-game series.

This weekend's series is slated to begin on Friday with Game One set for 5:00 p.m. while Games Two and Three will serve as a Double Header, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

West Alabama (16-12, 7-8 GSC) enters the the series, after sweeping their double header against Columbus State on Tuesday while Delta State (10-12, 5-9 GSC) comes in after splitting their midweek double header against Arkansas Monticello.

The Tigers returned to form in their double header against the Cougars on Tuesday which led to UWA picking up their fourth sweep of the year. West Alabama was without their star Second Baseman, Marissa Mitchell, whose return to the lineup is likely this weekend. While missing the last three games, Mitchell is batting .423 with seven Home Runs, and 21 RBIs, ranking within the top-five in the GSC in Home Runs and Batting Average.  In the midst of Mitchell's absence, Taylor Clegg and Ann Marie Stanbridge took their games to that next level while Ella Watson continues to grow.

Clegg comes into this weekend's action, hitting .444 in the last three games along with a homer, boosting her season average to .349. As for Stanbridge, she's batting .600 in the last three games without Mitchell in the lineup and has now registered multi-hit games in four consecutive contests. While Clegg and Stanbridge have put together their best stretches of the season, Watson has quietly become one of the best bats in the Tigers' lineup. The freshman has recorded a hit in six of the last eight games and is hitting .333 with one Home Run and three RBIs in the last four games.

On the mound, Madison Wright found her rhythm again this week as the senior lefty propelled the Tigers to their sweep on Tuesday. After recording a combined stat line of 8.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 12 SO in two games against Columbus State, Wright now carries a 8-6 record with a 3.22 ERA on the year. Wright will more than likely get the ball in Game One while Eleanor De Block will handle Game Two. Through 13 appearances, De Block is 7-2 with a 2.67 ERA. Megan Roe will anchor the bullpen as she comes into play after registering her first win in a UWA uniform on Tuesday against the Cougars.

Delta State is a balanced team, batting .284 at the plate while carrying a team ERA of 4.27. At the dish, the Statesmen have three players hitting over .300, with Emma Collier and Kyleigh Wheaton both leading DSU with a .375 average. Collier boasts two Home Runs and 14 RBIs on her ledger while Wheaton has hit one Home Run along with a team-high .418 on-base percentage. Delta State's starting Catcher, Avery Ragsdale completes the talented offensive trio for the Statesmen as she brings a .327 average into this weekend's series.

Ellie Cox leads DSU's pitching efforts. The junior leads the Statesmen with a 3.92 ERA and holds a team-high three wins on her record. Cox is allowing opposing batters to hit .314 at the plate, but has done a solid job of working her way out of trouble throughout her 39.1 innings this year. Along with Cox, West Alabama will see a lot of Emma Enderud. Enderud has pitched a team-high 58.1 innings and brings a 4.08 ERA into play.

First pitch for Game One on Friday is set for 5:00 PM while Games Two and Three are slated for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
