LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team dips out of Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Americus, Georgia for a midweek double header against Georgia Southwestern.
Wednesday's double header between the Tigers and Hurricanes is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. CST at the GSW Softball Field.
West Alabama (19-12, 10-8 GSC) enters play on a five-game winning streak with back-to-back sweeps coming over Columbus State and Delta State. For Georgia Southwestern (15-13, 4-5 PBC), they come into Wednesday's double header after sweeping Fort Valley State.
Led by the arm of Madison Wright, who was just named the GSC Pitcher of the Week for the second time, UWA carries a five-game winning streak into the Peach State on Wednesday. In the last five games, Wright has appeared in four of them, registering two wins and a save to get the Tigers back on track. Before their five-game win streak, West Alabama had dropped six straight games while also losing their star Marissa Mitchell for the next two weeks due to a concussion. Wright, along with Ella Watson, Ann Marie Stanbridge, and Taylor Clegg, carried the weight of Mitchell's absence and led West Alabama to a pair of sweeps over Columbus State and Delta State this past week.
After a phenomenal weekend, Wright is now 9-6 with a 3.28 ERA on the year while fellow starter Eleanor De Block continues towards an All-GSC selection, bringing an 8-2 record and a 2.72 ERA into Wednesday's matchup. Wright will more than likely get the ball for UWA in Game One followed by De Block taking the circle in Game Two.Â
Offensively for the Tigers, the trio of Watson, Stanbridge, and Clegg have been on a tear. Watson is hitting .333 along with two Home Runs and Seven RBIs in the midst of UWA's winning streak while Stanbridge has registered eight hits, accumulating a .444 batting average. In the three-hole spot, Clegg is batting .357 with a Home Run and two RBIs, creating an electric trio at the top of the order for West Alabama.
Georgia Southwestern's offense is top heavy as the Hurricanes have four player hitting well over .300, but carry a team batting average of .256. Cooper Watson, Madison Banks, Malone Aldridge, and Ashlyn Rodgers stand as the best bats in GSW's lineup, with Watson leading the team with a .356 batting average. The freshman has hit three Home Runs and has drawn 10 walks, bringing an impressive stat line into Wednesday's contest. As for Banks, she's one of the better contact hitters in the Peach Belt Conference as she carries a .354 average along with two Home Runs. Aldridge is an on-base machine and is dangerous on the base paths as the senior's swiped 15 bags along with a .313 batting average while Rodgers has driven in a team-high 21 RBIs in the middle of Georgia Southwestern's order.Â
The strength of the Hurricanes' squad lies on the mound as they bring a 3.46 Team ERA into play. Graceanne Spears and Pyper McCard lead the way and will most likely get the starts in Games One and Two. In a team-high 65.1 innings of work, Spears is 6-6 with a 3.54 ERA while McCard is 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA. Regan Lee anchors GSW's bullpen as she leads the team with a 2.59 ERA in 27.0 innings of work.
First pitch for Game One on Wednesday is set for 12:00 p.m. CST while Game Two will follow at approximately 2:00 p.m.
