LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team gears up for a three-game road series against the West Florida Argonauts that's set to begin with a double header on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
With Games One and Two slated for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., the two GSC powerhouses will wrap up the series on Sunday with Game Three set for 1:00 p.m.
West Alabama (25-14, 14-10 GSC) enters this weekend's series, after winning one out of three against Trevecca Nazarene while West Florida (26-11, 17-7 GSC) returns home, after winning their road series against Lee this past weekend.
This weekend's matchup between the Tigers and the Argonauts is as compelling as it gets as one of the top pitching staffs in the league visits the best offensive lineup. Led by Madison Wright, Eleanor De Block, and Megan Roe, UWA ranks second in the GSC with a 2.28 team ERA. Wright will most likely pitch the bulk of the innings this weekend, bringing in a pitching line of 13 wins along with a 2.90 ERA. The senior lefty is holding opposing batters to a .212 average which is a crucial stat heading into the weekend. As for De Block, she leads the team in ERA with a 2.28 mark along with a 9-3 record. Roe provides West Alabama with relief out of the bullpen and has accumulated 20 strikeouts in 26.1 innings of work.Â
Offensively, the top of the order continues to lead the way for the UWA. The trio of Marissa Mitchell, Taylor Clegg, and Ann Marie Stanbridge is hitting .363 as a group with Mitchell carrying the load with a .406 batting average along with 12 Home Runs and 34 RBIs. Clegg has really turned herself into a five tool player with no glaring weaknesses in her game. The senior is hitting .373 with five Home Runs and 24 RBIs while swiping a team-high 15 bases. As for Stanbridge, she's been solid all year, hitting .323 with a pair of Home Runs and 33 RBIs.Â
Down in the order, Haley Shannon has given the Tigers a lift with a mix of contact and speed. The sophomore is arguably the best bunter on the team which has helped propel her batting average back over the .300 mark.
West Florida is one of the best offensive teams in the country as they lead the GSC and rank 25th in the country with a .332 team batting average. Pitcher/First Baseman Hannah Harper is at the top of the Argonauts' roster as the junior excels at the plate and in the circle. When looking at Harper's line, her batting numbers jump off the page first. The junior sits second on the Argos in Home Runs with six and leads the squad in slugging percentage with a .625 mark, while hitting .383. Harper is surrounded by offensive talent such as Gianna Guerriero and Nicole Mergen. Guerriero is one of the top contact hitters and fastest players in the league, leading the team and ranking fifth in the GSC with a .423 batting average along with a league-high 30 stolen bases. As for Mergen, she brings the pop to West Florida's lineup, blasting a team-high eight Home Runs this season.Â
Along with Harper, Guerriero, and Mergen, reigning GSC Player of the Week, Erin Moon, Bella Holliday, Emma Brice, Angelia Discenza, and Jessie Baughan are all legit offensive threats as each bring in a batting average over .300, presenting an interesting challenge for UWA's Wright, De Block, and Roe.
On the mound for the Argonauts, Haley Guffey is the ace. Guffey leads the team with a 2.20 ERA, carrying a 16-6 record. Harper will be UWF's Game Two starter as she brings in a 3.16 ERA along with a 10-3 record, coupled with her impressive offensive numbers.
First pitch for Game One and Game Two on Saturday is set for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. while Game Three is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
