Tigers Head to Huntsville for Final GSC Series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team is set to travel to Huntsville this weekend for their final regular season series against Alabama Huntsville, beginning on Friday.

Game One is set for Friday at 5:00 p.m. while Games Two and Three are set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

This weekend is all about getting into playoff mode for the Tigers as they currently sit in the sixth spot in the conference, but can get all the way up to the two seed, depending on the results of this weekend's play.

Last season in the NCAA South 2 Regional, Alabama Huntsville ended West Alabama's season as the Chargers defeated the Tigers in a pitcher's duel, 2-1. That marked the fourth win of the year for UAH over UWA, but in 2025, both teams are different and the Tigers are on the hunt for revenge.

As we enter the final weekend of the regular season, a plethora of West Alabama players will make their final argument for an All-GSC selection. Madison Wright and Eleanor De Block are front runners to earn honors as starting pitchers as the duo has led UWA to a 2.74 team ERA which ranks second in the league. Wright is the ace, leading the team in innings pitched with 159.0, strikeouts with 123, WHIP with a 1.00 mark, and wins with 16. The lefty has won the GSC Pitcher of the Week award four times, which is the most of any other pitcher in the league. As for De Block, she leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference with a 2.13 ERA. The righty will handle Game Two of the series and looks to put a stamp on an All-GSC caliber season.

On the offensive end for West Alabama, Marissa Mitchell is in contention for the Player of the Year award. Even while missing six games this season, Mitchell leads the team in all of the major offensive categories while ranking in the top seven within the conference, including holding the top spot in slugging percentage and OPS. The Second Baseman will be the toughest out in the lineup for the Tigers this weekend, but she's also surrounded by dangerous bats in the order. Taylor Clegg is the perfect complement to Mitchell in the lineup as the senior brings a .375 batting average into this weekend's series. Clegg's slugging percentage is up to .596 after hitting 15 doubles and five Home Runs this year. With 16 stolen bases on her ledger and .936 fielding percentage, there aren't any clear holes in Clegg's game, making her a puzzle that the Chargers will have to solves this weekend if they want to win the series.

Ann Marie Stanbridge, Ella Watson, Haley Shannon, and Trinity Hatcher all bring unique skill sets to the table which has made UWA's offense one of the most dynamic in the conference.

After an explosive 40 win season in 2024, Alabama Huntsville currently holds a 26-19 record. The Chargers' offense was the definition of explosive last season but in 2025, they are more balanced. Heading into the final weekend of the year, UAH ranks sixth in the league with a .280 team batting average and seventh with a 3.52 Team ERA.

The Chargers' returned to of their best players from the previous season in Alexa Douthitt and Jada Henderson. Alongside West Alabama's Mitchell, Douthitt is the reigning GSC Co-Player of the Year, but after batting .439 along with 14 Home Runs and 60 RBIs, the junior is only hitting .238 with five Home Runs and 26 RBIs in 2025. Douthitt is still a dangerous bat in the Chargers' lineup, so Wright and De Block will have to pitch to her carefully. With Douthitt struggling this season, Henderson and Maddie Cartron have carried the load offensively. Henderson is batting .347 with two Home Runs and 27 RBIs while Carton leads UAH in all of the major offensive categories. Cartron, a Senior Infielder, carries a .357 batting average, eight Home Runs, and 35 RBIs into the weekend.

In the circle, Katie Bracken and Megan Shurtz are the workhorses. Bracken leads the way with a 12-9 record and a team-best 2.59 ERA and will most likely get the start in Game One. For Shurtz, she's compiled a 12-8 record with a 3.09 ERA in 111.0 innings of work and will handle Game Two.

First pitch on Friday is set for 5:00 p.m. while Saturday's double header is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. from Charger Park.
