LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball's Marissa Mitchell has been recognized by the Gulf South Conference as one of the top student-athletes across all sports as the senior was named to the GSC Top Ten on Wednesday.
The GSC Top Ten recognizes the top female and top male student-athletes for their athletic, academic, and extracurricular achievement during the 2024-25 academic year.
The top male and top female from each group of honorees will be awarded the Commissioner's Trophy, which is the conference's most elite award. The "Top Ten" are selected with the assistance of an advisory committee representing the Athletic Directors, Senior Women Administrators, Sports Information Directors, Faculty Athletics Representatives, and Presidents from randomly selected GSC schools, which makes a recommendation to the Commissioner, who has the final decision.
Mitchell is one of five female athletes selected to the GSC Top Ten after putting together a special 2025 campaign. After being named the GSC Player of the Year, First Team All-Region, and a Second Team All-American last season, Mitchell had an encore year in 2025. In her final collegiate season, the Second Baseman led the Tigers in Batting Average, Home Runs, RBIs, Slugging Percentage, On-Base Percentage, and OPS with an offensive statistical line of .382 BA, 15 HRs, 43 RBIs, .862 SLG, .493 OBS, and 1.355 OPS. Mitchell's Slugging Percentage and OPS marks also lead the conference, putting her in a league of her own within the GSC. The senior hit two Grand Slams in 2025, with one coming against Christian Brothers in a series where she hit 1.000 along with four Home Runs, six RBIs, and five Walks.
Defensively, Mitchell was stout. After moving from Shortstop to Second Baseman in the off-season, the senior recorded 96 putouts to just four errors to accumulate a career-high .970 fielding percentage. After another standout campaign, Mitchell was named First Team All-GSC and garnered an Unanimous First Team All-Region selection for the second consecutive year.
In the classroom, Mitchell majored in Historical Sciences, registering a 3.3 GPA and walked the graduation stage this past weekend, obtaining her Bachelor's Degree.
Mitchell is now a finalist for the GSC's Commissioner's Trophy, the conference's most prestigious award. The winner will be announced at a ceremony held by the GSC in Pensacola, Florida on May 29.
