LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama women's tennis team has claimed the No. 1 spot in this week's ITA Top 25 national rankings.
West Alabama climbed from No. 3 to No. 1 after an impressive weekend at the UT Tyler Invitational, earning wins over No. 12 Midwestern State, UT Tyler, and Cameron.
"This is a big accomplishment for our women and the first time in a long time that UWA Tennis has been at No. 1," said head coach Jeff Beaman.
The Tigers are now 7-2 on the season, highlighted by key victories against Flagler, Nova Southeastern, Midwestern State, Alabama State, and UT Tyler.
Individually, Alexa Milliam is ranked No. 12 nationally in singles, while Shaira Rivera sits at No. 24. In doubles, the duo of Milliam and Rivera is ranked No. 14 in the country. Valentina Mutilba and Milliam come in at No. 35, and the team of Nanoka Kazama and Jenaila Prulla is ranked No. 40.
On the men's side, Matias Iturbe is ranked No. 14 nationally in singles. In doubles, Iturbe and Gabriel Garay are ranked No. 25, while Jacob Tapia and Federico Iturbe are ranked No. 26.
The newly crowned No. 1 Tigers will open Gulf South Conference play Saturday at 10 a.m. against No. 2 West Florida.
"Playing No. 2 West Florida this Saturday at home sets us an epic match," coach Beaman closed.
