BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball squad split a pair of matches Tuesday night at Birmingham-Southern as the Tigers fell 3-0 to Martin Methodist before turning around and sweeping BSC 3-0 in the nightcap. UWA now sits at 8-16 on the season.
The contest against the hosts saw the Red and White bounce back nicely from the evening's earlier defeat and snapped a streak of four losses. West Alabama knocked off the Panthers (20-7) by scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-21 and outhit Birmingham-Southern by a .214 to .077 margin.
Olivia Drew recorded a double-double in the victory as she picked up 10 kills to go along with 13 digs, and she registered just one error in the match en route to compiling a steady, game-high .391 hitting percentage. Thais Hollerbach led all players in the contest with 12 kills.
Alexis McHale paced the Tigers with 33 assists in the affair.
On the defensive side, UWA was led by Casey Byrnes who recorded 19 digs, and Myeasha Williams who notched three blocks on the night. Three other Tigers – Jennifer Campbell, Katelyn Beardshear, and Hollerbach – each chipped on two blocks as the team recorded seven total blocks in the winning effort.
In the evening's first contest, the Tigers hung with Martin Methodist (14-15) as the set scores were 25-22, 25-21, and 25-23. UWA held a 19-16 lead in the third set – its latest advantage of the contest – but the RedHawks scored the next five points to take the advantage and eventually seal up the match.
Drew and Hollerbach each recorded eight kills in the contest to pace UWA's offensive attack, and Drew committed just one error on 26 swings for a team-best .269 hitting percentage. McHale led the team in assists as she racked up 27 helpers.
The pair of Hollerbach and Drew was also leaders defensively in the opening match as Hollerbach registered 18 digs to lead the Tigers, and Drew chipped in on a match-high four blocks while also adding 11 digs. Beardshear also collected four blocks.
With non-conference play wrapped up for the season, the Tigers will now turn their attention towards putting themselves back into the hunt for a Gulf South Conference tournament berth. That quest will begin this weekend with a Friday night match at West Georgia followed by a Saturday afternoon showdown with Valdosta State.
