Tigers Still Alive Despite Loss At UNA

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team concluded the regular season Friday night with a 3-0 road loss to North Alabama, but a West Georgia victory up the road in Huntsville, Ala. made things quite interesting in the Gulf South Conference Tournament picture as UWA, UAH, and UWG are all now virtually tied for the fourth and final seed.

With the setback, the Tigers finish with a 10-20 record and a 2-8 mark in Gulf South Conference play, while UNA improves to 18-8 and 7-2. The Lions won by set scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-9.

West Alabama and UAH have identical 2-8 records in league play following Friday night's action, and West Georgia sits at 2-7 with one contest remaining – in Florence, Ala. against UNA on Saturday. Ironically that means the Tigers will now turnaround and pull for Friday evening's opponent to beat the Wolves.

If that happens, the three schools would be deadlocked for the final tournament berth, and the tiebreaker would go the way of West Alabama. Each team finished 1-1 against the other forcing the use of the second tiebreaker which is sets won in the season series. The Tigers beat both the Wolves and UAH by a total of five sets to four sets to give UWA the upper-hand.

West Georgia and North Alabama play at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Thais Hollerbach led the Tigers against the Lions in what might possibly be her final game in a West Alabama uniform. She recorded 10 kills and six digs to pace the team in both categories. Setter Alexis McHale turned in 18 assists.

The Tigers were outhit by the hosts by a .338 to .070 clip.

Should UWA make the tournament field, quarterfinal action will be on Friday, Nov. 12. An update will be posted to www.uwaathletics.com on Saturday.
