LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Delta State on Saturday at Tartt Field. UWA (8-5) fell 15-4 in the first game of the series and then dropped game two 9-3.
DSU (10-2-1) pounded out five runs in the top of the seventh for the series clinching win. Three of the five runs in the frame came when Josh Gordon tripled to straight away center to score Cade Hoggard, Michael Niemann and Matt Discon.
UWA starter Cory Lopez (0-2) was saddled with the loss. Lopez tossed six complete innings allowing four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and a trio of walks in the loss.
Trailing 2-0 at the first inning, UWA rallied to the tie the game at 2-2 in the third. Bryan Mason, who led off the inning with a single to center, scored on a sac fly to right field by Clint Alford to force the deadlock. The Red and White's first run came in the second as Kevin Deese crossed the dish on a double play ball.
The Green and White answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to retake the lead at 4-2. UWA added a run in the home half the frame as Deese scored from third on a passed ball.
In game one, DSU brought out the bats scoring nine runs in the first three innings. The Statesmen posted three runs in the second inning and then pasted six on the board in the third. Chris Escobar roped a two RBI single into right field for the third and fourth runs of the inning.
UWA plated its four runs all in the fifth inning, cutting into the Green and White's lead. Douglas Frazier pushed the two runs across the dish with a single to center field, scoring Dallas Rogers and Mason. Deese followed a batter later with a two-run homerun to right field to narrow the gap to 9-4. DSU answered with a single spots on the board in the seventh and eighth and four more in the ninth to capture the series opening win.
Kasey Nafzger (1-2) received the loss with 2 1/3 innings of work. The Westerville, Ohio native allowed six runs on nine hits in the effort.
The two teams close out the weekend series on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch. The game will be broadcasted on FOX Sports 104.9-FM and at www.uwaathletics.com. A live video stream and live stats will also be available on the official UWA Athletic website.
