JACKSON, Miss. – The University of West Alabama men's and women's tennis team wrapped up the opening weekend of the season with the men taking a pair of matches against Millsaps and Jackson State and the women topping MC before falling to JSU on Saturday.
The UWA men, who opened the season on with a win over Belhaven on Friday, moved to 3-0 on the season after Saturday's pair of wins. The Tigers downed the Majors of Millsaps, 7-2 before taking a 5-1 win over NCAA Division I JSU, 5-1.
On the women's side, the Tigers turned back MC 7-2 before suffering a 5-2 setback to the Blue and White Tigers of JSU.
In doubles, the Tiger pairing of Danish Ahmad and Lucas Cruz claimed a win at the top doubles spot against JSU after falling earlier in the day to Millsaps. James Gardner and Juan Felipe Tellez turned back JSU's duo of Jiman Nelson and Sergio Salina at the No. 2 spot. Tellez carried the momentum from doubles to singles with a straight sets win over Nelson at the No. 1 singles spot. Cruz notched a 7-5, 6-1 win over JSU's Nicholas Crawford. Against Millsaps, UWA put together a clean sweep in singles play with the highlight coming at the top spot as Gardner battled MC's Malte Schick in a three sets thriller after falling behind after the opening set.
In the women's matches, the Red and White blanked the Majors in doubles to gain the early advantage. The bottom half of the lineup guided UWA to the morning win. Brittany Harris, Emily Gerding and Polina Babkina turned in wins to preserve the win. Against JSU, UWA had a strong effort in doubles to gain the doubles point. The lone win in singles came from Brittney Bowden at No. 2. She defeated Geneva Warren, 6-0, 6-1.
UWA returns to the court on Friday, Feb. 12, hosting Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m.
