Tigers Set for NCAA South Region Battle Against No. 2 Seed West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The postseason continues for the #16-ranked West Alabama Tigers men's tennis as the seven-seeded Tigers head to Pensacola, Florida for the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament against host and nationally top-ranked, two-seeded West Florida Argonauts men's tennis on Monday at 10 a.m.

West Alabama enters the regional matchup with a 15-7 overall record and a 5-3 mark in Gulf South Conference play after advancing to the semifinals of the GSC Tournament. The Tigers remained at No. 16 in the latest national rankings and will look to avenge a narrow 4-3 loss to West Florida earlier this season at the Vaughan Tennis Complex in Livingston.

The Tigers continue to be led by nationally ranked standout Jacob Tapia, who enters the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 46 nationally in singles play. Tapia has posted a 14-5 overall singles record this season, primarily competing at the top two positions in the lineup. The All-GSC First Team selection has won three consecutive singles matches entering postseason play and is 6-1 over his last seven contests.

In doubles competition, Tapia teams with Federico Iturbe to form one of the nation's top tandems. The duo is ranked No. 20 nationally in doubles and owns an impressive 15-4 overall record, including an 11-1 mark at the No. 2 doubles position. The pair enters Monday's matchup riding an eight-match winning streak.

Another major contributor for the Tigers this season has been Afonso Portugal, who earned All-GSC First Team honors after compiling a stellar 16-4 singles record and a 7-1 conference mark. Portugal has excelled at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions throughout the season and carries a 9-1 record over his last 10 completed matches.

West Alabama has shown depth throughout the lineup this spring. Iturbe has posted a 13-3 singles record, while Maksim Goncharov has combined for an 11-4 singles mark across multiple lineup spots. Itaru Kikuchi has also added seven singles victories during the dual-match season.

The challenge awaiting the Tigers is a dominant West Florida squad that enters the tournament with a 24-1 overall record and a perfect 8-0 conference mark. The Argonauts are led by nationally top-ranked singles player Sebastian Rondon, who owns a 22-2 record at the No. 1 position this season. Diego Duran is ranked No. 3 nationally in singles with an 18-2 record and was named the GSC Player of the Year.

West Florida also boasts one of the top doubles pairings in Division II, as Duran and Rondon are ranked No. 3 nationally with an 18-2 overall doubles record. The Argonauts feature four nationally ranked singles players overall, including Rafael Sabio at No. 57 and Mateo Martinez at No. 66.

The Argonauts were also recognized with GSC Coach of the Year honors, awarded to head coach Derrick Racine.

Despite the challenge ahead, the Tigers proved earlier this season they can compete with the nation's top-ranked team. In the previous meeting between the two programs on March 7, West Alabama pushed West Florida to the limit before falling by a 4-3 final score.

Monday's winner will advance further into the NCAA Division II South Regional bracket as the Tigers look to continue their postseason run on the national stage.
