LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team split the Sunday doubleheader with Columbus State as UWA (3-1) beat the Cougars 6-5 in 18 innings in the first stanza and fell 7-2 to Columbus State (2-2) in the night cap.
The 18 inning marked the longest affair in UWA baseball history as the Red and White battled back most of the game. The Tigers drew even with CSU for the first time in the bottom of the eighth as Brian Simone scored on an error.
The two teams matched each other the remainder of the way as both plated a run in the 13th and 16th innings. The game winning run came in the home half of the 18th as Douglas Frazier launched a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Bryan Mason.
Jesse Boyd received the win in the marathon outing as he recorded the last out in the top of the 18th by fanning Cameron Griffin. Boyd was one of seven Tiger hurlers to toe the rubber in the contest and 12 total pitchers.
The Cougars earned their revenge in the second game as CSU scored early and often to snap a seven game losing streak to UWA. The Red and Blue plated a run in the second and fifth to grab a 2-1 lead. The Red and White cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth as Clint Brown scored on a Kevin Deese single.
CSU answered in the next two innings plating a total of five runs. The Tigers pasted one run on the board but it wasn't enough as Deese grabbed his second RBI of the contest with a single that pushed Frazier across the plate.
Corey Lopez took the loss on the hill for the Red and White with five innings of work while surrendering two runs on five hits. Lopez carded five strikeouts and three walks in the loss. Jeremy White pitched in relief of Lopez with two innings on the mound. White allowed five runs on five hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout.
West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 10 as UWA travels to Montevallo for a single game affair against its former Gulf South Conference East Division foe. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
