Tigers Open GSC Action at UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team opens Gulf South Conference action on Saturday, Mar. 13 as UWA (13-6) travels to the University of Alabama in Huntsville for a three-game, weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. 

The games will be broadcasted on ESPN 104.9-FM and at www.uwaathletics.com along with live stats.

The Tigers, who haven't seen game action since Mar. 7, have won five straight outings heading into the first series of conference play. The Red and White are 7-2 in conference opening sets under UWA skipper Gary Rundles and have claimed the last five sets with UAH, including four sweeps.

Brian Simone leads UWA at the plate as the Amherstburg, Ontario-native is hitting just under the .400 mark with a .397 batting clip for the season. The junior outfielder is second in doubles (8), tied for second in triples (1), third in RBI (16) and fourth in homeruns (2) for the year. Fellow junior Colin McKeen has posted a .388 batting average through the first 19 games and is second in homeruns (3) and RBI (18). A trio of Tigers has logged 20-plus strikeouts on the season. Cory Lopez has registered a team leading 32 punch outs, while Kasey Nafzger and Colter Millican have each tailed 20 strikeouts.

The Chargers (12-5) have won nine straight entering the weekend series after starting the season 3-5. The Blue and White's last loss came on Feb. 24 as UAH dropped a pair of contests to Delta State. The Chargers erased a six-run deficit rallying to beat visiting Montevallo 7-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday afternoon. The reigning GSC East Division Player of the Week, Nick Huckaby paces the UAH offense with a .403 batting average and a team best 23 RBI. Dustin Bryant leads the Charger hurlers with 21 strikeouts. Bryant has logged a 2-1 record with 19.2 innings on the bump and a 4.85 ERA.

West Alabama will conclude the weekend series on Sunday, Mar. 14 with a single game slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
