HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team dropped its first Gulf South Conference East Division series, since 2008, on Sunday afternoon as UWA (14-8, 1-2 GSC) fell 10-3 to the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
UWA struck the first blow in the outing as Douglas Frazier scored on a Colin McKeen single to left field. After tying the game in the second inning, the Chargers (14-6, 2-1 GSC) took the lead in the third as Nick Huckaby singled to score Jordan Parker. The Blue and White saw its lead swell to 5-1 after UAH tacked three runs on the board in the fourth inning.
The Tigers nipped the lead down to two runs, plating a run in the fifth and sixth innings. Jody Morgan doubled in the fifth to score Brian Simone.
Deon Williams scored in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Dallas Rogers. The Blue and White answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh and four in the eighth to enlarge its lead. Ryan McCrory posted three of the four runs in the eighth with a three-rum, homerun to right field.
UAH starter Dustin Bryant (3-1) picked up the win with 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Kasey Nafzger (2-3) was saddled with the loss with five innings on the bump. The Westerville, Ohio-native allowed five runs, all earned, on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 20 as UWA hosts Lambuth in a three-game, weekend series. The Saturday doubleheader, which is a part of Super Tiger Day festivities, is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m.
